PREHISTORIC GROTTO
SAID TO BE PLACE WHERE ULYSSES STAYED
Another prehistoric grotto has just been discovered at the foot of Monte Circeo, near Littoria, on the fringe of the Pontine Marshes, says the Rome correspondent of the ‘ Observer.’ The grotto lies close to the underground prehistoric retreat discoveed last February, where fossil remains of early man were found.
The newly-discovered grotto lies at a distance of only 15yds from the sea in a small plantation of olive trees. The roof is covered with stalactites. As was the ease with the grotto at the foot of Mount Circeo, where a Neanderthal skull was found, the entrance is small and difficult. Workmen are engaged in widening the opening. Fossil remains of prehistoric man and and animals have been found.
Experts place the discovery in connection with the popular myth that indicates Mount Circeo as a place where Ulysses stayed.
