FRENCH SUCCESSES

ADVANCED POSITIONS STRENGTHENED DIFFICULT GROUND TO RECAPTURE GERMAN ARTILLERY ACTIVITY (British Official Wireless.) HUGBY, September 25. A French communique reports that there has been an improvement in their advanced positions. Enemy artillery has shown great activity in the region south-east of Zweibrucken, and this is being closely studied by the French High Command. There are conjectures whether this activity is in preparation for a visit by Herr Hitler, or whether it presages an attempt by the German forces to regain some of the ground captured by the French. This is a task that would be attended by difficulty, as the French positions have now been consolidated and barbed wire entanglements erected. ‘ Lo Jour’ declares that Poland allowed France and Britain to mobilise in peace. Their forces are now ready, and in such a 1 complete state of organisation that the Allies will begin the war in perfect order. ‘ Le Matin ’ declares that an impressive Franco-British army is the only bulwark against Hitler and Stalin. ‘Le Figaro ’ warns Frenchmen to carry gas masks to protect themselves against Germany’s “ secret weapon ” —namely, poison gas, SIEGFRIED LINE EXPLOSION IN TUNNELS (Independent Cable Service.) LONDON, September 25. It is reported from Brussels that an explosion occurred in underground tunnels of the Siegfried Line near Minden. Extensive damage was caused, holding up work on the line. [Minden is in the north-east of the Prussian province of Westphalia, not far from Osnabruck. It is about 100 miles east of the Netherlands frontier.]
