MEETING OF COUNCIL • The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night, the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) presiding. There were present Crs D. C. Cameron, J. AVilson, M. C. Henderson, 11. Walls, J. M‘Crae, H. L. Gibson, W. B. Taverner. E. J. Smith. P. G. Connolly, and AV. H. Borrie. LEAVE FOR EMPLOYEES. A sum of £20,797 was paid out to employees who enlisted during the Great War, stated the chairman of the Finance Committee (Cr AV. B. Taverner) when referring to a clause in his report respecting the granting of leave to those who enlisted just now for service. The clause in the report stated that the committee was giving consideration to the granting of financial allowances' to employees accepted for service. On this occasion, said Cr Taverner, the number might he expected to increase as the staff was now larger. The sum involved, too, might lie greater, as wages paid were now considerably greater than during the Great AALir. The matter was receiving very careful consideration by the committee, but in the meantime he could assure employees that leave of absence would he granted and their positions kept open for them. Cr Connolly remarked that he had hoped something definite concerning the council’s financial commitments had been reached. On Taverner stated the clause was only a progress report and the committee was going into the matter very thoroughly. The report was adopted. SCHEME 13 MEN. The report of the Reserves Committee. presented by Cr Smith, stated that authority had been granted to obtain the services of additional men to be employed under Scheme No. 13; these men to assist in the extension of the soldiers’ plots at the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery and in tree planting near the Opoho Tennis Courts. “ How many men are employed by the council at present? ” asked Cr M'Crea. “ I thought they were falling over one another.” “ There are about 300,” replied Cr Smith, 11 but if we can employ others we are only too pleased to do so.” The report was adopted.
