WET CANTEENS.

, TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —la the ‘ Evening Star ’ tonight I read that wet canteens are advocated by the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association for military camps. As a returned soldier, will you allow me to protest against such a proposal? I wonder if the fathers and! mothers of Dunedin realise what this means. Britain wants 100 per cent, trained, fit men. not drunkards. Thousands of young men, the cream of tho Empire, were ruined for life by the same method. In Dunedin to-day we have returned soldiers who oven yet cannot help themselves. I am rather surprised at Mr Jones (Minister of Defence) considering such a proposal. Under tho Defence Act it is illegal to take liquor into camp. Wake up, mothers of Dunedin, and make your voices heard in the matter. I hope Dunedin churches will also do their bit and nip this vile proposal in the bud.—l am, etc.. Garrison Artillery. September 25.
