SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

On Saturday night members of the Clutha Football Club entertained Mr Harry Major (who is about to be married) and Mr Norman Arthur (who has been transferred to Dunedin) at a social evening. Mr Major was the recipient of a barometer, and Mr Arthur of a gentleman’s toilet set. CLAY BIRD SHOOTING. On Saturday the Otago clay bird ■championship was hold on the South Otago Club’s ground at North Balclutha. Conditions in the morning were perfect, but in the afternoon they were tricky. Competitors were present frem Southland, Palmerston, and Dunedin. The shoot was conducted under the auspices of the local club, Mr H. Weir (Dunedin) being referee. A ladies’ committee looked after the catering arrangements. At the conclusi on Dr D. G. Radcliffe (president of the S.O. Club) presented the championship cup (held last year by Air S. Aburn), and thanked the shooters for their attendance. Mr G. E. Turner (Dunedin)’ and Mr T. Clouston (Central Otago) returned thanks. In the morning an open 21-bird handicap match was fired, the prize money being £25. J. Stiven (Balclutha), 19 first barrel, 2 second barrel; W. Elliott (Balclutha), 18-3; R. M’Donald (Dunedin), 20-1; T. B. M'Kinlay (Dunedin), 20-1; .J. Broad (Invercargill), 19-2, all with 21 birds, tied and divided the money. Other scores were; J. Beattie (14) D. Campbell (12), S. W. Geddes (12), E. P. Graham (17), L. P. Hayes (15) C. Wilson (14), A. Brown (14), A. Campbell (12), T. Leith (14), T. W. Burgess (12) all got 20 birds. G. E. Turner (15), J. K. Begg (11), T. Clouston (17), T. Bladder (11), G. Sinclair (14), J. Rov (14), 19 birds; W. S. Beattie (14). 18; H. Broad (11), D.,G. Radcliffe'(ll), 17; J; Roy (12), 15. . . The championship (21 birds) drew 25 entries. The winner received £ll (including sweepstake), T. Clouston £4 I6s 6d, Bladder £2 Is 6d, and Broad and Campbell £1 7s 6d. Scores: E. P. Graham (Dunedin), 13 first barrel, 8 second barrel, 21, first; G- Campbell (Balclutha), 20-0, 20; T. Clouston (Lauder), 20-0; T. Bladder (Invercargill), 20-0; J.. Broad (Invercargill), 17-3,. all .tied, , for second with 20. Other scores were: O. Wilson, R,, McDonald, T. B. M'Kinlay, J. Roy, J. Beattie, W. S. Blackler 18.
A 15-bird five-track match, all off 10yds, drew 10 competitors, and five tied with the possible. J. Stiven (11 first barrel, 4 second barrel), R. M'Donald (14-1), F. W. Geddes (15), E. P. Graham (12-3), T. W. Burgess (15). Teh competed. , A five-pair double rise resulted in F. W. Burgess (Dunedin) being first, getting his 10 birds -with the first barrel. J. Stiven was second with eight birds. COURSING. The South Otago Coursing Club held a trial meeting on Saturday, the idea being to encourage local dogs. Mr J. Gold was judge, Mr C. Garside slipper, and Mr J. Lawrence hare steward. The hares were in good condition and some good coursing was seen. Results:— First Round.—A. Low’s Popeye’s Mate beat Miss G. Sinclair’s No Takers n.s., 3J-2. Popeye’s Mate worked l the hare very well. A. Low’s Darkest n.s., beat A. Middleman’s Big Smoke, 1-0. The winner took a turn and drove home. P. Jardine’s Grand Laddie ran an accidental bye. Second Round.—Darkest beat Popeye’s Mate, 3J-2. A short lead. Both turned; the winner wrenched and killed. Grand Laddie ran a bye. Final.—Darkest (Grand 1 Laddie— Lady Diana) beat Grand Laddie (Goiden Laddie—Grand June), 4J-0. The winner maintained a good lead, wrenched, and turned. RUGBY. The following team has been selected to represent South Otago third grade to play at Dunedin on Saturday;—E. Reid (Clutha), Stewart (Clutha), Race (Crescent), Geddes (Clutha), Woods (Toko.), MjLeod (Clutha), Hodgins (Clutha), Miller (Clutha), E. Michie (Clutha), Anderson (Crescent), Tackney (Crescent), Hughes (Crescent), Washington (Clutha), Marshall (Crescent), Skinner (Toko.). Emergencies: Williams (Crescent), Storer (Crescent), and one to be selected. TABLE TENNIS. On Saturday a South Otago team visited Invercargill, the home team winning by 27 sets to 8. In the singles W. Fogarty and E. M'Millan were the outstanding players for South Otago. Fogarty proved too steady for the opposing players and won all six sets with aggressive tactics. M‘Millau also proved too good, his “ chopping ” puzzling his opponents, and he won all six sets. His performance was a feature of the
night’s play. The onlv other player to win any sets was F. Rullen. who won. two. In the doubles J. Blair, D. Munro, and W. Stewart all played well, many of their sets going to three games, but they seemed to lack finish. Fogarty and Bullen won two sets, and M'Millan and Blair and Munro and Stewart one set each. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING. On Saturday night the South Otago Association fired a match with an Otago team. After the match the S.O.M.R. Association entertained the Otago members at supper in the 1.0.0. F. Hall. After a communitv sing the president (Mr G. O. Sinclair) proposed a vote of thanks to the Otago Association for lending its team. He then called on Mr C. Gamble (president of the Otago Association) to present cups and shields won by the different members and teams of the S.O.M.R. Association. A return match will take place at Dunedin on October 7.
