CITY OF KAGAN RECAPTURED JAPANESE OFFENSIVES REPULSED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, September 23. The Shanghai correspondent of the Associated Press of America states that the Chinese have recaptured Kaoan and annihilated the Japanese, who occupied the city’ on September, 21. The Chinese forced the enemy to retreat throughout the Kiangsi front. The Associated Press correspondent ■at Hongkong says the Chinese repulsed Japanese offensives and inflicted heavy losses in HupeK, Hunan, and Kiangsi, and recaptured strategio town in North-west Changsha. It is asserted that Japanese airmen bombed 15 cities and destroyed 1,000 buildings in Loyang.

PEACE NEGOTIATIONS #

SOVIET NOT MEDIATING NEW YORK, September 23. The Chungking correspondent of tha New York ‘ Times ’ states the Soviet Embassy spokesman emphatically denied that negotiations for ChineseJapanese peace are proceeding at Chungking with a Soviet mediator, or that the Soviet Ambassador is visiting Shanghai to discuss prospects of a settlement. The Chinese appear confident that whatever plans Germany and Russia have in the Far East, they will not De disadvantageous to China.

BRITISH AMBASSADOR LEAVING SHANGHAI NEW YORK, September 23. The Chungking correspondent of tha New York ‘ Times ’ says the British Ambassador and his staff are leaving Shanghai on September 28 for Chungking. They will stay at least two months. The greatest significance is attached to the move as an indication of the importance of relations between China and Britain iu the immediate future. Up to the present the United States Ambassador has been the only one resident fct Chungking.
