Y.W.C.A. NOTES

(Contributed.) Miss Phyllis Hindle, general secretary of the Christchurch Y.W.C.A., was .the guest of Mrs C. M. Begg for the week-end,.September.B-H- On the Saturday evening she met a number of her old club girls, and told them about the proposed training course in Y.W.C.A. work, to be held at Timaru Y.W.C.A. during Labour week-end, in coiyunotion with Christchurch,,Timaru, and Dunedin Associations. Anyone interested who would like to attend the course should apply, to the general secretary of the local association. The monthly meeting of the World 'Fellowship Committee on Monday last took the form of a social evening. Much interesting information was gleaned about the manners and customs of people in various parts of Europe from guests formerly resident in those parts. On Tuesday, 12th, an interesting leeiure on-diet and menus was given in the Y.W.C.A. lounge by Miss Wilson, of -the Home Science Department of Otago University. She stressed the value of fresh fruit, vegetables, and milk in the diet.

On Thursday, 14th, Miss Dprothy Neal, from the Public Library, gave a talk on books, illustrated by extracts which she grouped under the headings of ‘ Novels With a Purpose, Modern Poetry, and Travel Books,’ On Saturday, 16th, a special board meeting was held at the house of Mrs C. M. Begg to discuss the report of the National Board meeting held recently in Wellington. Subjects discussed included decentralised work in other associations, and the place of the Y.W.C.A. in the community and in national emergencies. On Wednesday. 20th, the annual general meeting was held in the Y.W.C.A. Hall. The business meeting was followed by the sixtyfirst birthday party of the association. Representatives of the various committees lit the candles of the birthday cake, and musical items and a play reading were given.

The basketball season is now over, and Y.W.C.A. teams have been successful in annexing three of the Otago Basketball Association’s trophies. Y/W.C.A. Findlay’s, winners of section 1, and Y.W.C.A. Swifts, winners of section 2 in the second grade competition, played the finals last Saturday. Both teams played good basketball, with Findlays a little more accurate in netting the ball. The final score was

21-10'in favour of Findlays, who will thus hold the second grade trophy. Y.W.C.A. Elco defeated Y.W'.U.A. Greggs and Y.W.C.A. IV. in the fourth grade competition, and are to be congratulated on winning the trophy for that grade. Y.W.C.A. Greggs were successful in the fourth grade tournament, and will hold the tournament banner jointly with Eavensbourne. In the interhouse competition, Blackie’s I. were unbeaten in section 1, gaining 19 out of 20 cup points. Victory were runners-up with 18 points, having drawn with Blackie’s I. and D.S.A. I. In section 2 Alexto, playing good basketball throughout the season, had an unbeaten record, and will hold the second section cup for the ensuing year. The annual meeting of the Cricket Club will be held on Thursday evening, and all interested are invited to be present. Baseball practices have already begun in readiness for the Saturday matches, which will commence next month. Any girl wishing to join this club should make inquiries from Mrs M'Anghtrie at the Y.W.C.A. A number of teams have already entered for the big sports day, to be held on October 7, and those who have not yet scut in their entry form are reminded to do so immediately.
