(Received September 23, at 11 a.m.) The Ministry of Information states that during air operations on September 20 one German fighter aircraft was shot down by British aircraft in France. PROUD RECORD AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 22. (Received September 23, at 11 a.m.) The prompt offer of Australia to send «n air expeditionary force revives memories of tho fine record of Australian airmen during the last war. Some 400 pilots, 150 observers, and 40 other officers served in the Australian Flying Corps. Seventy-eight were killed, 68 wounded, and 33 were taken prisoner. Sixty of their machines were destroyed by enemy action, but they destroyed no fewer than 276 enemy machines and drove down 251. SUBMARINE DESTROYED SUNK BY BRITISH WARSHIP MONTREAL, September 22. (Received September 23, at 2.39 p.nlT) Captain Frederick Pickering, master of the United States steamer Steel Mariner, describes a British destroyer sinking a submarine disgpised as a fishing boat near the Scillies-on September 11. The submarine was apparently disabled and could not submerge. WANGANUI MAORIS OFFER FOR ACTIVE SERVICE (Bek United Press Association.] WANGANUI, September 23. That the Maoris of Wanganui support the Government’s defence policy was a decision reached at a meeting of representatives of the Wanganui tribe in the Native Land Court. The following resolution was carried unanimously: “ That tho Wanganui tribe fully supports the Government’s defence policy in the present crisis, and offers wholeheartedly the services of its people for active service, and strongly urges that all Maoris serve in a separate unit.”
