TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING Cr George Stevenson (chairman) presided at the monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council, held at Mcsgiel yesterday afternoon. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr J. A. Watters, Brighton, complained of damage to the domain by surface water. —Held over in the meantime.

Messrs N. and E. S. Paterson gave details of subdivision of Dunedin settlement.—Held over for inspection. The Taieri River Trust wrote regarding replacing the bridge at M'Neill’s property, Moniona, with concrete pipes.—Half cost of the pipes to be paid. Letters were read from the Hon. F. .lones, Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P., and the Otago Automobile Association regarding an application for a free Government grant for Middlemarch highway. —The grant was applied for ns a result of the serious position which had arisen in the country in consequence of the heavy damage to roads by phenomenal falls of snow. REPORTS. The inspector of works (Mr A. W. Finlay) reported on the Work of the past month. East Taieri Riding.—General surfacing and grading have been carried out during the month. The drains on School road were cleaned and widened, and culverts repaired. North Taieri Riding.—All mam roads in the riding were graded, and surfacing carried out where necessary. The Silverstream Valley road was scarified and graded, and the Halfway BushWhare Flat road graded. _ Kaikorai Riding.—Kaikorai Valley road was twice graded, and repairs to a damaged culvert executed. Ihe Wakari to Wingatui road is being surfaced. The Abbotsford-Winsatui road was insnected with Cr M’Millan, as instructed, and arrangements are in band to have it scarified, reformed, and blinded where necessary. Otokia Riding.—The old Brighton road was scarified and reformed from the State highway to the Eskdale Coal mine, and 54yds of binding run out. The road from Coach and Horses to Saddle Hill was scarified and reformed, and surfaced with Silverstream gravel. The road to Stephen’s was reformed and coated with Silverstreafn gravel. The complaint from the proprietor of the Coach and Horses was attended to. Ontram. Riding.—General surfacing has been carried out on Beehive, Loan, Granton, Kirk’s, and Millar’s roads. The Outram-Hindon road is being surfaced, and water tables cleaned after the snow. The No. .3 bridge on the Outram-Hindon road has been completely redeoked, and the handrails and approach fenaes repaired. Maunoatua Riding.—General surfacing has been attended to on M'Laren’s, Allanton-Berwick. . Henley-Berwick and Kowhai Spur roads. The Waipori road from Traquair has had the snow-drifts opened up to allow stock fodder to be carted.

Deep Stream Riding.—-General surfacing has been carried out, and several by-roads graded. The roads at Hindon, and the Outram-Hindon rofid have received attention. The contractor has made a start on the renovation of the surfaceman’s cottage at Shannon, and should have the contract completed by the end of the month. Strath-Taieri Riding.—General surfacing and grading have been carried out. Cnlverts were cleaned on the top road, and two culverts installed' on the Gladbrook farm road, Mr Downes Roberts defraying the cost of some. Arrangements were made with Mr Stevens that the council have the. use of the garage and yard opposite the foreman’s residence for the sum of 2s 6d per week, ori condition that he receives the council’s business at previous contract rates. —Highways.— No. 2.—This highway has been graded and surfaced throughout. The Outram-Middlemarch section received special attention, and is now in good order, but will develop a slippery surface in wet weather. The road still requires a considerable amount of surfacing metal to be run out. The Mos-giel-Outram section has had the water tables and ditches cleaned, and the section from the State highway to Mosgiei has had the pot holes repaired with honing mix. No. 3.—This highway was_ graded from No. 2 highway to the Taieri aerodrome.

No. 4. —This highway has been graded throughout. No. s.—This highway has been graded from Brighton to Taieri Mouth. Numerous slips have been, and are being, attended to. Retaining walls and stone pitching have been built and placed where necessary. General surfacing has been carried out over the remainder. No. 6.-—This highway has been graded and is being surfaced. _ The broken culverts have been repaired. No. 7.—Surfacing and grading have been carried out where necessary. Messrs Keogh Bros, have again been held up on their contract owing to rain and traffic interference with the subgrade before the first course could bo applied. No. B.—General surfacing and grading have been attended to. GENERAL. Cr Howell again spoke on his notice of motion to tfie effect that all allocations for work in the various ridings should be made from a general fund instead of from a separate riding account.—The motion was defeated.
