NORTH OTAGO NOTES
[Fkom Our Oamako Correspondent.] COUNTY COUNCIL. The Waitaki County Council met yesterday, Cr J. Rodman presiding. Advice was received that the following amounts had been provided for in the Highways Board estimates for 1939-40;—Maintenance: Pukeuri-Unia-xaitia £3,776, Maiareka-Duntroon £1,529, Whitstone-Five Forks £268, Maheno - Kauru River £338, South Oamarfl-Waianakarua £1,662, Hill-grove-Moeraki £157. Improvements: Pukeuri-Omarama, Horse Gully-Bor-ton’s section £15,300, Borton’s-Otiako £IB,OOO, Waiareka-Duntroou, lig Island bridge £1,957. ~ The matter of compensation for land taken for the Borton’s deviation was . referred to the chairman and engineer 1 for a report. It was decided to place three weirs in the Papakaio water race to minimise scouring. The Highways Board s‘ approval of the acceptance of T. Pheloung’s tender of £13,409 17s Bd_ for a section of the' Pukeuri-Kurow highway was received, the engineer reporting that .work v would be finished by March 31, ' The tender of Messrs J. D, Wat-, son and Co., Invercargill, for the supply of 2.000 dog collars at £3 a hundred was accepted. It was agreed to lend the Housing Department a grader to form a road at the Casanova housing block. The engineer (Mr H. Murray Reid) reported on maintenance work done on several roads. The cutting near Gemmell’s Crossing had been widened. A new culvert had been laid in Weston Park road. A timber bridge had been built to replace a culvert at, Meikle’s on the Dansey’s Pass road. Formation of the Lake Ohau road was nearing ' completion. The old Kakafao bridge had been transferred to the Serpentine Creek. EMERGENCY MEASURES. As some misapprehensior/ exists regarding the activities of the Oamaru Emergency Committee the mayor (Mr G. Familton) has urged citizens to remember that; the organisation is not merely a war precautions one, but will be useful in case of any calamity, such as an earthquake or epidemic. MUSIC FESTIVAL. MacDonald. PLUNKET SOCIETY. At the monthly meeting of the OamPiunket. Society, the new/Plunket pi-am, presen ted'byrelatives and friends of the late Mrs E.‘ IV Lee, was much admired. . It was reported that donations had been receivecKfor a similar memorial to the late Mrs R. S. Orbell. A money box systqm to help finance the running of the motor car was inaugurated. Donations of babies’ clothes were received from the Newborongh Ladies’ Guild and Airedale Women’s Division. The country nurse reported : Visits to homes 148,' visits to rooms 49, new cases 10. The town nurse reported: Visits to homes 182, to rooms 174, new cases 8.
THE RAINFALL. The rainfall in Oamaru in the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday totalled 56 points, making l.fjlin for the month. There was more rain last night. FISHING SEASON. Most of the rivers in the Waitaki Acclimatisation Society’s district are reported to be in good fishing order, and the prospects for the opening of the season are bright. WHITEBAIT RUN. The whitebait run in the Kakanui Hirer has commenced, and several visitors to the river have made small catches during the last few days. The run is later than usual! SQUASH RACKETS. In, the semi-finals _ of the Oamaru Sffuash Club’s championship R. Mathieson, who beat S. Milnes and A. C. leathers, will meet L. S. Green, and C. Stephens, who'beat H. Wilson, will meet J. Hendy. BADMINTON. In a semi-final of the On mem Undrninton Club’s handicap singles competition L. S. Green (owe 2u/ ueiu n. Kelk (owe 10) and in the final will meet the winner of the match between J. Taylor (owe 8) and E. Blomfield (owe 5). Jn the women’s handicap competition Miss P. Lane (rec. 5) beat Miss H. Grant (rec. 5). SCOTTISH SOCIETY. •> The monthly social of the North Otago Scottish Society was well attended and an .excellent programme was contributed by Mesdames N. Glass and L. M'Callum, Misses June Light»vood, J. Corlett, B. Sounness, I. Dobson, and Appleby. Messrs G. W. C. Lee, B. Scally, E. Pheloung, E. Pheloung, T. Pheloung, W. -Bremner, C. Pheloung, G.
