THE CARE OF SILVER
It is not always an easy business to dry the inside of a teapot after rinsing. In the case of your best silver one, drop into it a lump of sugar when you have finished with the dish cloth. Keep the sugar at the bottom of the pot when it is put away, for it absorbs any moisture left and prevents meatiness. Nor is it quite simple to remove tea stains from a silver teapot. To clean thoroughly inside, brush with a paste made with equal quantities of flour, soda, and vinegar. Stand overnight and wash the pot out with boiling water nest morning. All silver ware should be kept in good condition by washing it after use in hot soapy water to which a little ammonia has been added. Rinse in hot water, dry well, and polish with a chamois kept specially for the purpose.
Black marks on salt spoons should be soaked in olive oil. Then wash the spoon in the usual way. A solution of hyposulphite of soda will clean a spoon of egg dr mustard stains. When silver has to be stored away, a few pieces of camphor kept beside it in box or drawer will prevent tarnishing. Or, it may bo wise to smear over the silver not in regular use with a light coat of olive oil or vaseline. Wrap each piece in flannel before it is put away. Vaseline is also useful if silverware has become badly tarnished. Rub a little vaseline all over the silver and leave for about 24 hours. Then wash off with warm, soapy water, dry thoroughly, and polish with a good silver polish. Another excellent tarnish remover is a paste made of ammonia and precipitated whitening. Though there are several good silver polishes on the market, you may prefer a mixture of jeweller’s rouge and methylated’ spirit. It may be made at lioraq and bottled for use. Silver certainly keeps bright a long time when cleaned this way.
