LIQUID MANURE
A judicious use of liquid manure will tend to promote a quicker growth. Weak liquid cow manure given once a week to a bed of backward seedlings soon makes a difference in their appearance, and will also encourage earlier blooming. Liquid manuring, however, must not be overdone, or the plants will sicken and may even die (says the ‘ Taranaki Herald’). At any sign of the foliage turning yellow it may be concluded that the close has been too strong, and the liquid manuring should be discontinued. Liquid manure should be given to plants only while their roots ate moist. If the weather is dry and the soil lacking in moisture, give a good watering before applying the liquid manure. Liquid manure should only be given to plants which are established—-that is to say, if you plant out seedlings, liquid manure should not be given till three weeks afterwards, to give them a chance to make new roots and get a grip of the soil. Nitrate of soda is a wonderful stimulant for all green crops such as lettuces and cabbages, the results being apparent in a few days after application. This may also be used with advantage on some of the flowers, such as pansies and violas, but should not be overdone. Better give a weak dose once a fortnight than too strong a one once every three weeks. Use at a strength of lo ■/. (two teaspoonsful) to a gallon. Wash off the foliage with clear water after application.
