NAZI MGPPING-UP OPERATIONS ESTIMATED TO TAKE A WEEK BERLIN, September 21. The Nazis estimate that the mop-ping-up operations will tako a week. The army is reluctant to shell Warsaw heavily, hoping that surrender will save further destruction _ of valuable property. Civilians, besides soldiers, have been thrown into prison camps. DEFENCE OF WARSAW ENTRENCHED GERMANS DISLODGED WARSAW, September 21. A communique issued by the defence army says that Polish troops advanced over two miles in the west sector, retaining the suburbs of Praga and Wola, and capturing many prisoners, three heavy guns, and seven light machine guns. A light horse division dislodged entrenched Germans. STREET RUNNING WITH BLOOD ' GHASTLY SCENES IN CAPITAL LONDON,: September 21. (Received September 22, at 8 a.m.) The Germans have apparently overlooked the fact that while the Warsaw radio remains the city’s sole link with the outside world it is impossible to deceive anybody as to what is occurring. The station this morning announced that heavy artillery was taking great toll of women and children. The population were constantly fighting new outbreaks of fire, repairing new damage, and clearing up refuse. Following a successful Polish counterattack 30 German planes made a devastating raid, but seven were shot down. The announcer said the street was still running with blood, and priests were administering the last sacrament to men, women, and children dying everywhere. IN SOVIET-OCCUPIED AREA SHOPS ORDERED TO REOPEN MOSCOW, September 21. Thousands of refugees are flocking to the areas occupied by the lied Army from the direction of Warsaw, according to tho Moscow wireless. The Red Army commanders have ordered all shops in the occupied territory to reopen. They must accept Soviet currency and must not raise prices. RAMPART AGAINST BARBARISM FAMOUS POLE'S MESSAGE GENEVA, September 21. (Received September 22, at 8 a.m.) M. Paderewski, in a message to all civilised nations, said: “My country voluntarily sacrificed herself to fulfil a historic role as a rampart against barbarism marching towards world conquest.” REPORTED SEA BATTLE PROBABLY FIRING OF SWEDISH ARTILLERY NEW YORK, September 20. The Copenhagen correspondent of the ‘ New York Times ’ says the Swedish naval authorities to-night stated that the reported sea battle was probably only the Swedish artillery firing at manoeuvres at Gothenburg. FUTURE DF VILNA MAY BE HANDED BACK TO LITHUANIA KAUNAS, September 21. it lias been officially announced that Russia told Lithuania that she intends to occupy only territory inhabited by White Russians and Ukrainians, which is taken to mean that she will hand over the Vilna area to Lithuania CRUDE DIL SUPPLIES INADEQUATE FOR NAZI WAR MACHINE NEW YORK, September 21. Statistics showing that the entire crude oil production of countries able to supply Germany will be inadequate for the Nazis’ mechanised army and air force for a long war were presented at a gathering of scientists ta celebrate the eightieth anniversary ot tho drilling of the first American well. Dr Gustav Egloff said Russia, Poland, Germany, and Rumania together produced only 200,000,000 barrels aunally, about a quarter of the United States production. _ This was bound to nullify the Nazi air superiority. He added that the United States alone was able to produce high octane petrol for all the world’s high-speed planes. ■ In addition, England and France could draw from South America, Persia, and Iraq. GERMAN AIR FORCE FORMIDABLE FLEET CLAIMED LONDON, September 21. (.Received September 22. at 8 a.m.) A Berlin correspondent says that Germany since January has manufactured between 10,000 and 11,000 aeroplane engines. Allowing for losses in Poland. Germany might bo regarded as having 8.000 front-line machines, at least half of which are bombers.
