MANCHESTER UNITY
■ In view of the tragic happenings of recent weeks, the members of Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge at the fortnightly meeting declared their unswerving loyalty to King and Empire. N.G. Bro. Thomson presided. It was resolved that a group photo of Prov. Treas. Bro. J, A. Hopcraft, P.P.G.M.s J. H. F. Hamel and E. S. Clarke, and P.G.s Bros. J. G. Patterson and W. J. Bardsley be inserted in the current copy of the handbook, they having been in office together in the lodge 52 years ago. An agreement was arrived at with the Valley Lodge regarding the subject for debate at the Valley meeting on October 2. The permanent secretary and the treasurer entertained the brethren with a trump whist drive, prizes being awarded to Bros. J. Lyon, B. Barnett, F. Foster.
The monthly meeting of Loyal Middlemarch Lodge was held on Tuesday. Owing to unforseen circumstances it was decided to cancel the visit to Loval Naseby Lodge and pay an official visit to Loyal Mosgiel on September 30. P.G. Bro. W. Glover presented the lodge with a framed photograph of the shield winners of 1937. At the close of the meeting the social half-hour took the form of useful suggestions, and Sisters T. Pedofsky, F. Keast, and E. Valentino were given charge of the social portion of forthcoming meetings.
Loyal Roxburgh Lodge met recently, N.G.' Bro. A. J. King presiding over a full attendance. P.P.G.M. Bro. T. P. Michelle and P.G, Bro J. G. Peafson were appointed to represent the lodge at the district meeting at Balclutha. At the conclusion of business P.G.s 13ros. J. Hissock and W. L. Georg© led a debate on the subject ‘ Was Mr Nash Justified in Imposing Import Restrictions?’
The first function in connection with the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Loyal Albion Lodge was held _ at the fortnightly meeting. It comprised the entertainment of juvenile lodges, the boys being splendidly catered for with competitions, games, and supper. The anniversary souvenir programme of events to be hold from October 25 to 29 (inclusive) is to hand. The brochure is of a comprehensive nature, detailing the history of the lodge from its inception in October, 1864, to the present day, and is very largely the work'of the lodge secretary, Bro. A. G, Monk. Delegates to represent the lodge at the meeting at Balclutha are N.G. Bro. Taylor. V.G. Bro. J. E. Grant, P.G.s Bros. L. E. Anderson. C. L. Anderson, H. A. Pennv, and P.P.G.M. Bro. P. W. Stabb.
Under the control of N.G. Bro. A. M'Farlane, Loyal Valley Lodge held a. successful meeting on Monday evening. An interesting discussion ensued on the business to be transacted at the district meeting. The proposal to establish a war relief fund from which shall be paid the contributions of members who joined the order prior to September :5, 1939. and shall serve in any branch of His Majesty’s forces under active service conditions, provided such members be not more than 13 weeks in arrears at the time of enlistment, met with unanimous approval. Delegates appointed were Bros. Robson, Scott. Jarvis, and Russell, The secretary of the Past Grands Lodge notified members that the entertainment of wives and lady friends had been deferred until a later date.
