WORKING HOURS
NO EXTENSION CONSIDERED MINISTER'S CATEGORICAL DENIAL [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 21. When a strong rumour that the Government was preparing a plan for an extension of working hours was referred to the Hon. P. C. Webb to-day he replied that no such scheme was under consideration. Mr Webb added that he could only repeat his previous announcement — that there would be no variation of awards until all the parties concerned had been consulted. Arbitrary methods would not be adopted, and the Government had not yet contemplated making any extension "of hours for any section of workers.
Answering another question, Mr Webb said he had not heard of a suggestion that a section of railway servants would be placed on a 44-hour week. In any case the suggestion was incorrect.
