TAIERI COMPETITIONS

ANNUAL FESTIVAL Interest is being .well maintained in the annual Taieri Competitions Festival, and a large audience enjoyed a varied programme in the Coronation Hall, Mosgiel, last night, under the chairmanship of the Rev. H. W. Haigh. The following results wore announced : Vocal Solo (ladies). —Miss Marion Duncan 1, Miss Joan Oliver Mrs F. M‘Millan 3. Also competed: Miss J. Thomson and Mrs J. Pearce. Another good class. The winner had a voice of excellent tone and colour. Her rendering was in fine, thoughtful taste. She worked up to a good climax. The second prize winner had a very promising voice, and caught well the mood of her selection. Vocal Solo (men). —Mr B. M‘Lean 1, Mr R. Douglas 2, Mr A. Dixon 3. Also competed: Mr Allan Fairmaid. The winner had a delightful voice, with excellent tone quality. His rendering was thoughtful and artistic. A very promising vocalist. The choice of selection in this section was very commendable. Vocal Quartet (any voice). —Messrs E. W. Cate, G. Hunter. W. R. Crichton, and IR. Gordon 1; Misses May Martin. Winnie Gibson, Nan Brown, and Allison Gibson 2; Messrs B. M'Lean. J. Milner, W. (Bathgate, and W. Reid (commended). The winners had good blend and balance. Intonation was not consistent, but the general effect was neat, climactic, and rhythmic. Piano Solo (IS years and over). — Miss Joyce Ford was the only competitor, and was awarded first prize. Her choice was ‘ Val.se ’ (Op. 70, No. 2, Chopin). The judge expressed regret that there was only one entrant. Tone was fair, but a little indicisive. Piano Duet (18 years and over). — Misses Olive and Ellice Nieper 1, Mesdames G. Andrew and G. Peterson 2. The winners, who played ‘ Norwegian Dance 1 (Grieg) had good balance. Tone was well built Tip at the end of the first section. The second prize winners attempted a work, ‘ Hungarian Rhapsody, No. 2,’ (Liszt-Bendel), which was a little beyond them, but made a good attempt. Tap Dancing (under nine years).— Miss Margaret Clark 1, Misses Lorna Prattley and Doris Stone (equal) 2. Also competed: Misses Alice Mplvillc.. Ruie More, June Tregilgus, Shirley Stewart, June Stewart, Tui Bain. Operatic Dancing (under nine years). —Miss Helen Fraser 1, Misses Joy Scott and Shirley Stewart (equal) 2. Also competed: Misses Alice Melville, Lorraine Stewart, Betty Applegate, ißuie More, June Tregilgus, Shirley Price. Operatic Dancing (12 and under 1G years).— Miss Winnie Paul 1, Miss Phyllis Spence 2, Miss Miriam Wilde Tap Dancing (12 and under 1G years). —Miss Audrey Wheel or 1, Miss Irene Leitch 2, Misses Winnie Paul and Dorothy Tyrrell (equal) 3. Also competed : Misses Patricia Hanley and Beryl Gilchrist. ONE-ACT PLAY. The class for ono-act plays was continued, and the following were staged; —Green Island Women’s Institute, ‘White Queen, Red Queen’ —Mrs M Mimes, Mrs Geddes, Miss Myrtle Smellie, Mrs W. Miller, Miss Pauline Miller, Miss Miller, Mrs IR. Moreland. Mrs East, Miss Glenna Smith; Green Island Women’s Institute, ‘ Auntie’s Millions ’ —Mrs Robinson, Mr C. Martin, Miss Myrtle Smellie, Miss M'Lean, Miss Miller] Miss Walker. This class will he continued this evening. To-night’s programme will consist of tap and operatic dancing, vocal solos and duets, piano solos and duets, character dances, character sketches, action songs, sacred choir music, and the last of the one-act plays.
