WESTERN FRONT OPERATIONS FRENCH CONSOLIDATING POSITIONS GERMAN ATTACKS HURLED 6AGK PAWS, September 19. (Received September 20, at 11 a.m.) It is officially stated that nothing has happened in the last 48 hours to change the position on the west front. The French are consolidating their positions and have built pillboxes and concrete trenches up to the limit of their advance. The air force continues reconnaissance work, and the pilots are showing skill and courage in eluding German fighters. A restricted enemy attack occurred during the night in the region of the east Saar front. The attack was repulsed. The French hurled back a German attack east of the Blies (River, the German troops ineffectively striking under cover of a heavy artillery barrage. CIVILIANS RETURNING TO PARIS GOVERNMENT'S ADVICE DISREGARDED PARIS, September 19. (Received September 20, at 11.5 a.m.) Hundreds of evacuated families are returning to the capital, despite the strongest Government advice to remain in the country. MESSAGE TO WARSAW POLAND THE STANDARD BEARER OF LIBERTY BROADCAST FROM LONDON LONDON, September 19. (Received September 20, at 1.30 p.m.) A message from Britain broadcast to the city of Warsaw in Polish by the 8.8. C. during the Polish news said: "This is a message from the people of Britain to the city of Warsaw—All the world is admiring your courage. Once again Poland has fallen a victim to the aggressive designs of her neighbours. Once again she, by heroic defiance of the invaders, has become the standard bearer of liberty in Europe. We and your allies intend to continue the struggle for the restoration of your liberty. Please reply to this if you can during the night." BITTER ARGUMENT COLONEL BECK AND MARSHAL SMIGLY-RYDZ SUBJECT NOT DISCLOSED NEW YORK, September 19. Rydz occurred at the station while they were farewelling President Moscieki, who was entraining for Craiova, near the Bulgarian frontier, where he received permission to reside. The subject of the argument is not disclosed, but the two are journeying by separate routes to Bucharest, from where it is reported they may go to Paris. HATRED OF GERMANY EVIDENT IN SLOVAKIA PARIS, September 19. (Received September 20, at 10.5 a.m.) The Gestapo is reported to be driving against Slovaks who are favouring cooperation with the Czechs as the hatred against Germany grows, REVOLT IN SKODA WORKS HUNDREDS OF ARRESTS COPENHAGEN, September 19. (Received September 20, at 11 a.m.) The Gestapo is reported to have made hundreds of arrests after a revolt in the Skoda works. Families of those arrested are forbidden to wear mourning if their relatives are executed.
