96 COURT APPEARANCES PERSISTENT OFFENDER BAILED Three times previously convicted of drunkenness in the last sis months, and making his ninety-sixth appearance in the Police Court to-day, Martin Joyce pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness. , . Senior-sergeant Claasen told the court that Joyce had made ninety-five previous appearances, and he no longer had the privilege of optional punishment, “He seems to be an incorrigible drunkard,” added Mr Claasen. “It is four months since he was last before the court. Has he been work-ing?”-asked the magistrate (Mr J. R. Bartholomew).
The Senior-sergeant said that Joyc* was working in the Clinton district. Joj'ce said that he had come in tn town to have his teeth fixed. The Magistrate: “That is the story yon told me last time.” Joyce repeated that he had broken his teeth and had come to town to have them fixed.
Sentencing Joyce to seven days’ imprisonment, the Magistrate warped him that if he came back to the court on a similar charge he would probably ba sent away for 12 months. > •.
