NORTH OTAGO NOTES
[From Oor Oamaru Correspondent.] WAITAKI HOSPITAL BOARD. Mr W. Forrester presided at the monthly meeting of the Waitaki Hospital Board yesterday. Messrs D. J. Ross and W. Simpson were absent owing to illness, and it was decided to write to them hoping for a speedy recovery.
Reports from institutions were received as follows:—Oamaru Hospital: Admisisons 107, discharges 87, died 10, remaining 85, operations 54, outpatients’ visits 274, daily average of in-ipatients 81.6. Victoria Home: Admissions 2, discharge 1, transferred to hospital 1, death 1, remaining 22 (one female). Kurow Maternity Hospital: Admissions-6, discharges 3, remaining 3. The medical superintendent (Dr R. Bevan Brown) and matron were appointed the board's representatives on the Voluntary Aid Committee. It was decided, to join the Hospital Boards’ Union.
The charge for patients at the hospital was increased from 9s to 14s a day, it being explained that this would not affect patients for free treatment, except accident cases and patients from other boards received for treatment.
HOSPITAL MATRON RESIGNS. The Waitaki Hospital Board yesterday regretfully received the resignation of the matron of the Oamaru Hospital, Miss Mackie. The chairman (Mr W. Forrester) said an opportunity would be taken to express suitably appreciation of Miss Mackie’s long and valuable services S.P.C.A.
Mr A. Bloch presided at the monthly meeting of the North Otago S.P.C.A. A letter from the Auckland Society regarding small stray animals was held over. The inspectors reported having investigated and attended to cases of starving sheep, two horses unfit for work, and one of cruelty to a dog. Various other complaints were investigated, but the cases had not necessitated action.
LAWN TENNIS. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Waianakarua Tennis Club: —Patrons, Mr and Mrs C. Morris; president, Mr A. M'Kerrow; vice-president, Mr R. Sowden ; secretary, Mr Sowden ; delegates, Messrs M'Kerrow and Sowden. WESTON HALL SOCIETY. A successful bazaar was held by the ! Weston Hall Society to raise funds for renovations. Competitions resulted : No. 1 competition, Mrs Martin 1, Mrs IH. Stamford 2. Kiltie doll, Mr John M'Phail (Taihape). Iced cakes, Miss W. Gemmell and Mr E. Laney. Hot dinner, Mrs E. Familton. Cold dinner, ! Mrs I. Mitchell. Layette, Mrs A. E. i Howell. Pullover, Mr Smart. ST. PAUL’S TENNIS CLUB. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the St. Paul’s Tennis Club:—President, the Rev. Dr T. Paterson; vice-presidents—Mrs J. A. Meldrum, Miss R. Hill, Messrs J. C. Kirkness and E. D. Watts; secretary, Miss I. Bain; captain, Mr E. Bain; vice-captain, Miss A. Watts; committee—Misses M. Gibson, E. Gray, D. M'Pherson, J. Dixon, Messrs T. Grayburn, T. Edwards, and R. Meldrum. HOCKEY. Oamaru A won the North Otago Men’s Hockey Sub-association’s handicap competition for the Jacobs Cup by beating Rovers A by 8 goals to 1. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. At the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr H.‘ W. Bundle, S.M., Charles Augustus Brown was fined £1 10s and costs (£1 ss) for driving without due care and attention.
