GRANGE CRICKET CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING MR 0. G. STEVENS PRESIDENT In the absence of the president (Mr T. H. Elmes), Mr W. M. Beal presided at the sixty-first annual meeting of the Grange Cricket Club, held last night. There was an attendance of about 40 members. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, urged members to lend their support to the secretary and committee in their efforts to make the forthcoming diamond jubilee celebrations a success. Commenting upon the performances of tho teams last season, Mr Beal remarked that it was to be regretted the senior eleven had not maintained the old Grange standard, either in the matter of wins and losses or in fielding. Ho trusted that an effo'-t would bo mado to improve the team’s work in tho field. Referring to the outbreak of war, the Chairman asked members to do their best to keep the club going. There might be a call for some of them, ho said, but those who remained behind would fill the gaps, and not allow the game to lapse. They should remember the British spirit of “ Never give in.” Air E. A. Hamel seconded the motion. Air A. R. Knight (captain of the senior eleven) said that the real reason for tho lowly position occupied by the first eleven was the poor fielding, a branch of the game in which general weakness was apparent throughout the province. This was due to the fact that players were not fond of fielding;

in short, they would not work. He would do his best to bring about an improvement in the future. The motion was carried. The following office-bearers were elected: —Patron, Mr 11. M'Lean; president, Mr O. G. Stevens; vice-presi-dents, as before, with the addition of Mr T. H. Elmes; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr W. A. Rowland; assistant secretary, Mr C. Gal- , land; delegate to Boys' Cricket Asso- '■ ciation, Mr M'lvor; delegates to Sports . Protection Association, Mr A. Res- '. tieaux; hon. auditor. Mr G. A. Nelson. Five new members were elected. In accordance with notice of motion, [ Mr Bird moved that the rules bo [ amended to permit of the various teams [ electing their own captains.—There was , a considerable difference of opinion ex- . pressed on this suggestion, and Mr J. Dey moved as an amendment: —" That the captains for the opening matches ■ of the season be appointed by the comi mittee, after which the captains for the remainder of the season be balloted for by the members of the respective . teams."—A further amendment moved bv Mr Knight was that in the cases of . the senior, intermediate, and second • A grade teams, the, teams select their own captains and that for all lower i grades the selection be made by the committee. —After a long discussion ) Mr Dey's amendment was carried by . a small margin and became the rule.
