ENLISTMENTS STEADILY MOUNTING GOOD PROGRESS WITH MEDICAL TESTS [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 19. A further 750 men for the special military force were medically examined at the four centres in the northern military district to-day, with the result that 493 were classed fit, 178 temporarily unfit, and 79 permanently unfit. The percentage of fit men was 65.7. . , Up to to-night 1,460 men in the district had been passed for the force out of 2,317 examined. WELLINGTON. The approximate total of registrations for the special force at the military headquarters in Wellington last night was 1,650. There have been seven days’ recruiting so far and the daily average is 235. CHRISTCHURCH. Fifty registrations yesterday brought the total enlistments in Christchurch to 994. VETERAN'S EXAMPLE ENCOURAGING THE YOUNGER MEN (Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 19. With more than 50 years of military service behind him, Colonel G. J. Smith, of Opawa, to-day enlisted for service with the special force. Sharing with Sir R. Heaton Rhodes the honour of holding the senior colonelship of the Canterbury Regiment, Colonel Smith is 77 years of age. He said to-night that he had enlisted to encourage young men to offer their services also. HARBOUR BOARD EMPLOYEES COVERING DEFICIENCY IN PAY [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 19. All members of the Auckland Harbour Board’s staff of more than one year’s standing who perform military, naval, or air service are to have their pay augmented by an amount equal to any deficiency between their war service pay and what they would have received from thc/board in their normal occupations. This decision was made by the hoard on the recommendation of the hoard in committee. PROVISION OF CHAPLAINS ANGLICAN CHURCH ARRANGEMENTS [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 19. Full support for Archbishop _ Averill in his plans regarding the provision of chaplains for the military forces was expressed at a meeting of the Auckland Clergy Association. The arrangements that would be necessary were reviewed by the archbishop, who announced that provision would he made for ministration in the various parishes from which chaplains were drawn. Members of the association pledged themselves to support his proposals, and it was stated that full details of the church's plans would be announced shortly. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER The Church Worship Committee of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand has been advised by the qlerk that the church will be called to unite in the observance of the National Day of Prayer on October 1. and is engaged in preparing a special order of service for use on that day.
