WORK FOR WOMEN.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The large attendance at the meeting on Thursday last, in response to the appeal for voluntary workers to extend the work of the Order of St. John and Red Cross during the continuance of the war, was very gratifying, and is evidence that the women folk of this city arc determined to co-operate and render every assistance possible in the carrying on of this humanitarian work. Tlie conduct of the meeting, however, I think left much to be desired, in that no opportunity was given for the nomination to the executive of any of those members of the order who in tha gasi Jjav?. yolufetaril^'fltn^

gratuitously given" much time to this self-sacrificing work.

It seemed evident that the committee was pre-elected, so to speak, and this would seem not to he conducive to the wholehearted co-operation which is so necessary. I think lam expressing the opinion of many of the older members when I say that a little consideration in this matter would have been appreciated as an act of courtesy, and their knowledge would have been most helpful. T am of opinion that no levy should be made on those voluntarily offering their services, but that funds should be raised by public subscription. Presumably in the near future some, provision will be made by the Government for this purpose.—l am, etc., '", HuMANruniAN* ,j gqptwobfr %9t . ’ ,:,i
