Mr H. M'Dowell Smith left for Wellington by the express this morning on business connected with the Otago court in the Centennial Exhibition. Mr P. O. Smeliie was a passenger by this morning’s express for Christchurch.
Mr M. Silverstone left for Wellington by the express to-day. At the monthly meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce last evening Mr I. S. Cantrell was appointed the chamber’s representative on the Dunedin Travel Club Council.
Mr A. M‘Bean, formerly of Auckland, who for four years has been head of the English section of the Rosenberg International College, Switzerland, has returned to New Zealand on a holiday visit.
Mr F. E. Baume, formerly editor of the 1 Sunday Sun,’ Sydney, passed through Auckland on Monday on his way to Great Britain, where he will act as editor of European services for a chain of six Australian newspapers. Mr H P. West, for many years secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, was elected a member of the council of that body on the motion of Mr H. C. Cameron at last night’s meeting of the council.
At last night’s meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association the president (Mr C. W. Clark) referred to the loss suffered by Mr W. N, Connell by thedeath of his mother.
At a meeting of the executive of the Council of the Plunket Society yesterday the death of Sir William Hunt was referred to with deep regret. The executive placed on record its appreciation _of the distinguished services that Sir William Hunt had given to the society, arid its sense of irreparable loss in his passing. As a member of the Advisory Board of the society and chairman of the Karitane Products Society he gave unstinted service to the cause of mother and child. By his generous gift of his_ home at Bainfield, Waikiwi, he made it possible for the Invercargill branch to establish a Karitane Hospital to serve the Southland province. The sympathy of the society is extended to his widow and his family in their bereavement. Guests at the' ' Grand Hotel are Mr and Mrs P. C. H. Petersen (Auckland). Mrs Prank Hay, Mr F.
