BUSINESS AS USUAL!

TOURIST DEPARTMENT POLICY PEOPLE FOLLOW NORMAL ROUTINE ‘‘lt is clearly desirable in every branch of activity for people to carry out their normal routine as much as possible,” said the district tourist manager (Mr 11. G. Sincock) when approached by a 1 Star ’ reporter tiiis morning concerning the effects of the international situation upon tourist traffic locally. Air Sincock said that the Tourist Department figures for the year ended March 31 last constituted a record, and the figures for the first fortnight in September last year were also a record for that period. Naturally there have been many inquiries since the outbreak of hostilities as to the desirability of cancellations of bookings made for the holiday period. “ It is most gratifying, however,” said Mr Sincock. “to find that not only the majority of these people have decided to carry out their normal routine, but that business for the last fortnight has been equal to the record figures set up over the corresponding period last year.” He added that even in England the holiday was considered not a luxury, but an essential to the well-being of the people. Questioned concerning the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, Mr Sincock said that there seemed every indication that Now Zealand people at least would visit Wellington just as they had arranged previously. Various southern resorts are already being inquired for, he stated, and while no doubt it is possible that there may be last-minute cancellations, it seems to be the general trend to follow the sensible policy of carrying on as usual.
