LAWN TENNIS UNION
HATCHES OPEN ON OCTOBER 14 Satisfaction at the progress made during the year was expressed by members of the Dunedin Lawn Tennis Union at the annual meeting held last night, over which Dir E. L. Hope presided. Progress was continually being made, and the union was definitely on the road to realisation of the objects for which it had been established, the chairman said in moving the adoption of the annual report. Last season there had been an increase in the number of clubs affiliated and the match play had been interesting. The Easter tournament, too, had been a big success, although it showed a slight financial loss. The financial position of the union had suffered in consequence of a fair amount of unexpected expense tliat was not likely to recur. Members of the Management Committee were congratulated on their work, and the report and balance sheet were adopted. OFFICE-BEARERS. Office-bearers were elected as follows: —President, Dr W. H. Borrie; vice-presidents, Messrs A. H. Williamson, A. T. Dl'lndoe, W. H. Strang, G. Thomson, E. Sims, R. H. Price, R. Dl'Kinnon, W. Morrison, B. Perry, E. Bowie, and F. Laidlaw; chairman of committee, Dir E. L. Hope; honorary secretary, Dir D. H. Dlason; honorary treasurer, Dir R. Watts; publicity officer, Mr R. Gorkin; auditor, Dir R. Dl'Kinnon; management committee, Dlessrs R. Facer. H. Hoare, F. Sims, T. Webster, J. Smith, J. Findlay, and E. H. Lamb. The meeting decided to send a letter to Dir R. Gorkin expressing appreciation of his services as publicity officer and ladder secretary. OPENING DAY. October 14 was fixed as the day for the opening of the union’s competitions, and 5 p.m. on Dlonday, October 2, as the closing date for entries with the secretary. Advice was received from the secretary of the Dlacandrew Road Club (Dir j. J. Ford) that the club bad been compelled to disband because the courts were required for other purposes. In disposing of the club’s property, it had been decided to present four silver cups to the union. They were in pairs and it was suggested that they should be called the J. W. Dove and the J. J. Ford cups. The meeting expressed appreciation of the gift, adopted the suggested names, and decided that the cups should be alloted to special interclub mixed doubles handicap competitions. They are to he awarded for two sections, one of the A. intermediate and B grades, the other of the C and D grades, and the club representatives are to he handicapped by the union and to play off in a special tournament.
