TAIERI COMPETITIONS
SECOND DAY OF FESTIVAL There was a fair attendance at the second day of the seventh annual Taieri Competitions Festival in • the Coronation Hall, Mosgiel. The Rev. Stanley C. Read was chairman. The programme consisted of action duet in character (under 15 years) piano solo (16 and under 18 years), character sketch (under 16 years), action songs in character (under 12), playettes, recitation, humorous (12 and under 16), piano duet (15 and under 18 years), and action song in character (12 and under 15 years). The following results were announced last night:— ACTION DUET, in character, under 15. Misses Beverley Wix and Audrey Edmond ... 1 Misses Rene Repine and Lois Ryan 2 Misses Mavis MacDonald and Velma Lobb and Miss June Valpy and Master Blair Thomson (equal) ... 3 In some eases intonation was faulty, but competitors _ showed commendable artistry. The winners were effectively costumed and exhibited considerable stage craft. PIANO SOLO. 16 and under 18 years. Miss Hilda White 1 Miss Lyla Gibson 3 The only competitors. Only two entrants, but the standard of their performance was commendable. No. 1 in the ‘ Beethoven Dance ’ was
somewhat lacking in rhythmic flow and dynamic effect. No. 2 gave a graceful, fluent, and effective interpretation of Bridge’s ‘ Valse Capricieuse ’ that gained her first place. CHARACTER SKETCH, under IC. Miss Nessie Holland 1 Miss Glenna Smith ... 2 Miss June Tregilgus ... 3 Also competed: Miss Velina Robb, Miss Betty Tunzelman, Miss Olive Scott, Master Jack Miller, Master Kenneth Goodey. The winner gave a good impersonation of a cockney at the theatre. She has a gift for character work. The competitor placed second is a very good performer, has a good sense of tragedy; and gave a charming performance. The third prize -winner has very good promise. PLAYETTE, limit of six players, under 12 years. Mrs E. Lobb’s pupils 1 Miss Myrtle Smellie’s juveniles '... 2 Miss M. Swallow’s juveniles No.- 1 3 Also competed: Miss M. Swallow’s juveniles No. 2. This iplayette section is a very good one for bringing out children, and some very good efforts were witnessed. ‘ The Ann Chair ’ was done by very small children, who all had a very good sense of character. The cast were all equal in standard. ’ Princess Kiudheart ’ was spoilt by one character, who was not up to the standard of the others. It was a pleasure to listen to the young people. ACTION SONG, in characer. under 12 years. Master Arthur Holmes ... 1 Miss Hilary Mason 2 Miss Beverley Wix and Master Murray Edmond (equal) 3 Also competed: Miss Jean Valpy, Miss Audrey Edmond, Miss Mavis MacDonald, Miss Velma Lobb, Master Bruce M‘Gregor, Miss Betty Tuuzelman, Miss June Tregilgus, Master Kenneth Gooder, Miss June Applegate, Miss Diane Geddes, Master Neville Madden. In most cases selections were good, but-teachers should studiously refrain from presenting rubbish to small children. Artistry should be developed in its highest sense. The winner sang with delightful head quality. The second place was won by artistic interpretation.

ACTION SONG IN CHARACTER, 12 and under 15 years. Master Blair Thomson I Miss Glenna Smith and Miss Dorothy Mutch (equal) ... ... ... ... 3 Miss Rene Lepino 3 Also competed; Miss Lois Ryan.
