SCOUT NOTES

Headquarters Notices. His Excellency the Governor-General has approved of the award of the Medal of Merit to G.S.M. Moore. Results of estimation tests held last Saturday: Passed: Numbers —G. Grindley (St. C.), F. Shaw (O.B.). Heights—N. Wales (R.), A. Davidson, D. Bolton (St. C.), —> Thomson (G. 1.), N. Mitchell (Mos.). Short measurements —F. Shaw,- G. Smith, D. Boulton, A. Davidson, Thomson, N. Mitchell. Entries close for the metropolitan camp on September 21 at H.Q. Camp at Passmore, on September 23, at 3. The ambulance class, has commenced and will be held at H.Q. every Mondai' and Thursday night, at 7. Pathfinders’ examination, September 20, at H.Q., at 7.30. Results of cooking examination will be published next week. The examiner has expressed satisfaction at the manner in which Scouts carried out their test, and has awarded B. Pearce (N.E.V.) and 11, Blanchett (Moh.) first equal in the damper competition.

Group Reports, 2nd Dunedin (Mornington).—After roll call and inspection a visit was paid to St. Francis Xavier Troop. The Huirapa Troop is busy with ambulance, signalling, and Scout pace. Several Scouts have passed the pace. A hand Soccer competition is causing a great deal of interest. The following have passed the cyclist badge;—F. Nauman, A/ Gardiner, 11. Gray, B. Wanty, and D. Thomson.

sth Dunedin (Ocean Beach). —There was a good attendance last Saturday night, when the programme commenced with pioneering. During the course of construction of a look-out tower square and diagonal lashings were taught, while the spare boys spent their time making fence styles and chariots. Gaines occupied the next period. During announcements the eight boys who acted as patients for the V.A.D. examination were thanked. 6th Dunedin (Mosgiel).—Twenty-six Scouts enjoyed a game of hand Soccer. After inspection the patrols carried on in patrol corners. Scouts Scott and Hendry were presented with their second class badge,_ and Scout Strachan was welcomed into the brotherhood. Scouts Thomson, Mitchell, and Tweed were successful in passing their cook’s badge. To assist with the finances for the new H.G., a bottle drive will be held on October 7.

7th Dunedin (Anderson’s Bay).—lmmediately after flag-break a start was made running out the land lines for the telephones, after which the senior boys in the signalling squad : had practice in Morse and telephony. During this period the rest of the troop concentrated on the semaphore. After work had been completed the troop fell in for inspection and games. During the week-end six of the senior boys cycled to Evansdale Glen and spent an enjoyable time.

9th Dunedin (Mohican). —A fair attendance of Scouts marked last Friday’s parade, which opened with the second class boys practising Morse signalling and the tenderfoots ambulance. After roll call Scouter fully explained the A.R.P. system. For the rest of the evening games were played. After dismiss aC. of H. was held. During the holidays a class of signalling was held by P.L. Hall, and several of the cyclists made trips round the Peninsula and to Brighton. 15th Dunedin (St. Clair).—Twentyseven Scouts were present at flag-break last Friday. After inspection N. M'Donald was presented with his second class and artist badge, and D. Boulton was presented with his reader s badge. A special Morse signalling squad was chosen, also a squad with its fireman’s badge, to assist at the various fire stations when called on. Games were followed with a yarn on the Marie Celeste. Wesley. Commissioner Wing and D.S.M. Beauchamp paid a visit to conduct the metropolitan inspection. Mrs Kitchen and Mrs Chalmers also attended. Patrol corners occupied about three-quarters of an hour, the Owls taking lashing. Hawks signalling, and Bulldogs ambulance.
