OTAGO TOO GOOD SOUTHLAND BEATEN, 7-0 In the senior hockey match between Otago alid Southland, which was played on the Oval on Saturday, the homo team displayed far better form than the visitors, and ran out winners by 7 goals to 0. The ground was. in good condition, and a fast pace was maintained throughout. The junior match between the provinces was drawn, each side scoring two goals. The teams were:— Otago.—Hercus, Wood, Seelye, Betting, Gurr, Bedford, Stewart, Alldred, Webb, Yuile, I. Ryburn. Southland.—Jones, Lythgoe, Barraclough, Campbell, Semmens, White, Rennidk, Speirs, Dey, Mullen, Grey. Otago won the bully-off, and within less than a minute Yuile netted after receiving from Alldred. The Maroons, recovering from the shock, attacked in turn, Dey and Lythgoe being prominent. The forwards could not finish off, however, and Hercus was able to clear. Play was even, but Otago settled down the more quickly, and their team work was noticeably better than that of the visitors. From a hit from the circle Jones (Southland’s goalie), after stopping the shot, momentarily lost sight of the ball, and Yuile hopped in smartly and again scored. A penalty bully later against Seelye for “ kicks ” gave Southland an excellent opportunity, but the Otago man won it and cleared. Another rally by the Maroons, in which Speirs, Dey, and Campbell were in the van, threatened, but Herons again repulsed the attackers, and at half-time the score was Otago 2, Southland 0. The second spell was overwhelmingly in favour of Otago, who showed excellent 'judgment in making their passes. Their stick-work was clean, and they were faster and smarter altogether. Five minutes from the resumption Alldred scored from in front. Despite some fine work by White (the visitors’ right-half) the Otago forwards came again, led by the speedy Stewart, and Webb, receiving from Ryburn, shot the fourth goal. This was followed a minute later by a fifth from Alldred’s stick. At this stage Otago were swarming over their opponents, and Webb scored again from close in. Then Southland rallied, but their work near goal.

It was rather a lucky shot by Campbell, which opened the scoring for Otago. In the last 10 minutes Southland again got away, and the centreforward, Patterson, came through well to even the scores.. Patterson played
a strenous game, and Harris, centrehalf, was Otago’s outstanding player,-. The final scores were:— Otago J, Southland 1 Messrs G. Hope and W. Boocock were umpires. • ■ WOMEN'S GAME Playing on a fast ground at Logan Park, Training College defeated Milton by 5 goals to 2.
