Convinced that the American “ starting gate” is a great advance_ on the New Zealand practice of lining the horses up at the harrier, Mr J. R. It solved the delay at the starting pest, kept unruly horses fitr’er contra 1 , and was better for tbe jockeys and tlie public , The starling gate was drawn on wheels and had places for 12 horses. If the field was larger two gates were used Immediately the race started the gates were taken away and the course kept clear. This year the Los Angeles Turf Club held meetings continuously for 41 days, except for week-ends. It employed a staif of 3,000 and had 400 windows for betting. Last year it paid out_ nine million dollars in stakes and 1,455,000 dollars in taxes. All finishes of races were photographed and timed to onehundredth part of a second.
