PETROL FOR PRIVATE CAR OWNERS QUICKLY SUPPLIED WITH COUPONS Working with clockiike precision, clerks under tho direction of tho Fuel Oil Controller have served the wants of tho groat bulk of car owners in the matter of petrol supplies. Coupons wore issued on Friday and Saturday last up to 8 p.m., 3,274 owners getting their allotment of coupons for supplies for tho months ahead. In addition to these, 376 motor cyclists also had their wants attended to. The work went forward without a hitch and the staff who were responsible are to be congratulated on the efficient manner in which it was carried out. Never at any time were they unable to cope with tho flow of applicants, and the steady stream was kept moving throughout the two days. All an applicant had to do was to give the number of his vehicle and when his registration card, was selected from the cabinet file he was asked his name, the make of his ear and then requested to sign his name along the margin. In nearly all instances it took under a minute to attend to each individual applicant. There are still a few motorists seeking coupons, and while there has been no fixing of a time limit for obtaining them, in motorists’ own interests it would bo advisable that those who have not obtained their issue should do so within the next day or two while the clerks specially detailed for the work are still available. It has been found that a number of motorists who have their vehicles registered in Dunedin, have transferred to centres outside the city, and when making application for an allocation of petrol they have had to have their registration cards forwarded to the town where they now reside. This has meant additional work, for all these registration cards have had to be duplicated. This has been the procedure followed where the applying motorist has had no on© in Dunedin to whom he could grant written authority to uplift his coupons for him. Where that has been possible it has been permissible _ for an absentee owner to send written authority to- a friend. This may still be done, and is advisable where possible, for it saves the issuing authority the trouble of duplicating registration cards and forwarding them to another centre. In striking contrast with _ the time and trouble involved in getting a permit for petrol,-the issuance of coupons to private oar owners has been expedited with promptness, and the smoothness of the operation has been very favourably commented upon by members of the public.
