The four district transport licensing authorities have been authorised by Mr Semple to bold public hearings to review the transport licenses issued for the conduct of services parallel to the railways, with the object of economising on petrol. “ 1 have directed the licensing authorities to carry out these reviews.” stated Mr Semple, ” in accordance with the provisions of tho transport legislation because, while it is not desired to take any steps that might unduly disrupt national production and trade, it is felt that anything in the way of wasteful usage of petrol should be avoided while we are at war I would like to assure any of tho operators affected that any alterations made in their services will be for the duration of the war period, and that a further review will be mado when hostilities cease.”
