“ * (the .Western front. NEW YORK, September 17. The. Paris correspondent of the ‘ New York Times ’ stales that the, continued arrival of German ■reinforcements dominates the situation on the wesi front. French headquarters confirm the surmise that they are from Poland, describing fliem as aviation and large units implying several divisions. Recent French and German communiques contained every indication of preparation for battle. The arrival of the new units has raised speculation concerning the German intentions. Obviously they must attempt first of all to halt the French progress and save Saarbrueken. which was reported to be on the point of falling. Secondly, they will try to wrest the initiative from the French and drive them to the Maginot Line. Success would merely transfer elsewhere the fight between the two walls going on for the last fortnight. It is recognised that tho Maginot Line is stronger than tho West 'Wall, it would be a long siege in which the Germans would be fighting time because of the economic situation. WHERE WILL GERMANY STRIKE? NEW YORK Sept. 17,—The correspondent of the ‘ New York Times ’ states that Paris experts imply that Germany may attack elsewhere than the Maginot Line, necessitating Violation of the neutrality of one of more States, precipitating a second world war. Clearly Switzerland rejects any. conditions attached to neutrality. Germany has guaranteed Belgium, providing no Power uses Belgian territory as a base from where to prepare an attack on Germany. .It is significant in connection with this point that British information announced that rumours from German sources wore being spread throughout Belgium that there was imminent danger of a British landing on the Belgian coast. Switzerland is mobilised, and is watching, particularly the valley of the Aar, a vulnerable route to Geneva, threatening Lyons. Belgium is also mobilised, but Luxemburg is unarmed, undefended, ami very nervous. WELLINGTON ENLISTMENTS. WASHINGTON, September 17. —The Basle correspondent of the Associated Press says the Germans are reported to be attacking the French lines which have been tightening in the Moselle Valley. The reinforcements have stimulated the German morale. Captured Polish war material and German motorised equipment have arrived. A heavy German attack began at dawn 10 miles east of the Moselle Valley. • The French control the important highway from the Moselle to the Saar, basing their action on Buschdorf and Tunsdord. The French are advancing steadily to the north-east and north, threatening to isolate the Germans holding the parts between Perl and Tettingen. The German attack is based at Saarburg Forest and the Saar River near Orscholz and is reported to have struck southwards, supporting the second attack west from Merzig. AVONDALE RACES.
