GOLD ROD BEATS ROYAL CHIEF ROSEHILL RAGES SYDNEY, September IC. At the .Rosehill races High Caste and Reading provided a thrilling finish in the Rosehill Guineas, the former winning by half a head. Wilson’s finish in third place after coming from a long way back and covering more ground than was necessary was full of merit. Gold Rod won the Hill Stakes without trouble from Royal Chief, who was beaten at the turn. Red Sails enhanced his Metropolitan chances with a runaway victory in the Spring Handicap. Malagigi occupied a handy position at the home turn, where Red' Sails came through tiie field and won full of running. by two lengths, with Malagigi three-quarters of a length away third. Ellis) 2 Bramol, 9.4 (M'Menamin) ... ... 0 Fifteen started, including Glenoraboy and Moorsotis, who finished in the ruck. Won by a length, with two lengths between second and third. Gold Salute, having his first run in Sydney, had a great trip along the inside, anc finished impressively. This colt is expected to do well here. DEFAULTER TO SPELL. Defaulter appeared at Randwick on Saturday and cantered round a speci-ally-watered grass track, after which he was examined by a veterinary surgeon. He showed considerable leg improvement, but is apparently still a long way from being fit. The veterinary surgeon advised that he be given a spell, and certainly he will not be raced during the next two months. AJAX ALSO LAME. A report in regard to Ajax in Melbourne reveals that he is lame, but it is not certain whether the seat of the trouble is in a foot or a shoulder. MOONEE VALLEY MEETING MELBOURNE, September 16. At Moonce Valley the Moonee Valley Stakes, one mile, for three-year-olds, resulted. PURE GOLD. 8.9 (W. Cox) 1 Grand Son, 8.9 (0. Phillips) 2 Glenfino, 8.2 (Dewhurst) 8 Twelve started.
