SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

[Fbom Oue Correspondent.] PERSONAL. There was an attendance of over 250 at a complimentary social tendered to Mr and Mrs T. G. Cannon in the Coronation Hall, Milton, on Thursday night. Mr Cannon has for some 34 years been associated with the Otago Fanners’ Co-operation Association, and for some years was in charge of the Milton branch. Owing to contracting a physical disability he was recently compelled to retire, and Thursday’s social was tendered by residents and the farming community as a mark of the esteem in which he is held. Mr W. Allison presided, and the evening was devoted to dancing to music supplied by the Ambassadors’ Dance Band, interspersed with items by several present. During an interval Mr J. 1. Paul, on behalf of the subscribers, presented Mr Cannon with a cheque, and Mr Jasper Clark, on behalf of the directors and staff of the Farmers Cooperative, also handed him a cheque. The Milton Borough Council recently received from Miss Inglis an interesting gift in the shape of a photograph of the Milton Town _ Council in 1874. The names of those in the photograph are; Messrs Jas. Goodall (mayor), George Wilson, R R. Jones. Jas. Inglis, EL White. J. J. Lane, and Jas. Henderson. The council at last meeting accepted the gift, and decided to write a letter of thanks to the donor. The snow and rain up country this week have caused a sharp rise in the Molyneux River, with the result that there has been an appreciable rise in the flood waters at Paretai, and on Thursday the road at the old pilot station was submerged to such a depth that the bus could not get the low road and had to travel to Balclutha via Roraahapa. This further rise m the flood waters has aggravated the position at Paretai, and the plight of the settlers there is indeed a sorry one.
