HISTORIC RUINS AT PORT ARTHUR

Relics ot the early prison days of Port Arthur, Tasmania, are to be purchased by the State Government, to make the district a “show place ’ for tourists. An official organisation has recommended to the Government the acquisition of the prison commandant’s house, powder magazines, Smith O’Brien’s cottage, police court ami hospital, and the Government cottage. The Government already owns a number of sites, including the church, penitentiary, model prison, Isle ot the Dead. Point Puer, Remarkable Cave, the coal mines at Saltwater River, and a portion of Mount Arthur. The purchase of a private museum of relies also is suggested.
