Thq British Postmaster-General re•ently inaugurated the new submarine 00-axial telephone to Jersey by speaking by telephone from the General Post Office, St. Martin’s-le-Grand, to the Lieutenant-Governor, the bailiff, and other distinguished guests present at the ceremony in Jersey. Major Tryon’s voice was transmitted from London by land lino to Compass Cove, near Dartmouth, and thence by the new submarine cable to Jersey, where it was amplified by loud-speakers to enable all present at the ceremony to hear his speech. The Poetmaster-General announced that work was in hand for the, full exploitation of the new cable which would eventually provide 12 London-Jersey, four London-Guernsey, and five interisland telephone channels. Plans were in preparation whereby a telephone service would be provided for the first time between Alderney, Sark, and the mainland.
