RETIREMENT OF ADMIRAL TYRWHITT (Admiral Sir Ihidley Pound, First Pea Lord, has been promoted Admiral of the Fleet on the retirement of Sir Reginald Tyrwhitt, Bart. Leading the Harwich Force, as it was called, , the Arethusa helped to sink three German cruisers and at least two destroyers, being engaged herself - for oyer half an hour, and almost crippled by shell fire. His destroyers also played a prominent, part in the Dogger Bank battle in 1915. when battle cruisers wore engaged for the first time. SERVICE IN CHINA. For his services during the war he received a D.S.O. and in 1917 was knighted. He was made a baronet in 1917 and received a grant of £IO,OOO. After the war he commanded the third Light Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean, and from 1923-25 was commanding officer of the Coast of Scotland. He held the command of the China Station during a critical period of the Chinese Civil War. He was promoted to Admiral on his return from China in 1929. and held the Nora Command from 1930-33. In 1933 and 1934 he, was first and principal A.D.O. to King George V., piter which ho was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet, Admiral Sir Dudley Pound was t-np-taift of the Colossus at, Jutland, the only vessel in the Battle* Fleet itself to- be hit hy; German gunfire.
