NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN
DUNEDIN BRANCH . At the September meeting of the Dunedin branch of the National Council of Women, Airs W. N. Benson presided over a large attendance of members. A welcome was extended to two new representatives, Dr Rippen, of the Medical Women’s Association, and Mrs Angus Rossi, of the Otago Univereity’s Women’s Association. Gratification was expressed at the financial response to the appeal for funds made at a special community sing for the Occupational Centre for Backward Children. Advice was received from headquarters that the biennial conference, which was to have been held in Christchurch this month, would be postponed for at least six months. Miss M'Kenzio read extracts from the 1938 Government report on child welfare in New Zealand. A discussion was led by Miss M. Salraond on foster homes for wards of the State, and the qualification necessary for work amongst children irr receiving homes and health camps. Other speakers were Miss L. Sullivan and Mrs Angus Ross. Miss Lovell-Smith read extracts from the ‘ 1938 Government General Survey on Public • Health ’ over the last 100 years in New Zealand. The Government report on the Country Library Service was read by Mrs G. H. Seddon. This service was inaugurated on May 30, 1938, and was the means of a regular supply of books being issued through a central source to country districts for recreation and instruction. Miss M. U. Begg, Miss N. Tyndall, and Mrs Ferguson spoke of their knowledge of the work done by the South Island book van.
