WOMEN'S HELP IN WAR

Miss Elizabeth Hess, an instructress at Swanley Horticultural College, Kent, has organised a women’s “ larder army.” She has been appointed organiser of the new National Produce Guilds established' by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes and backed by the Government, which has made a grant of £SOO a year for five years. By the end of the year practically every county in England and Wales will have its guild. Members will be trained in the growing of fruit and vegetables; butter making, cheese making ; bee keeping, poultry farming, and in bottling, canning, drying, and preserving food. In peace time the scheme will result in a higher standard of living in rural areas. In an emergency members of the guild will be immediately available to instruct the Land Army and others in the task of _ increasing and- conserving food supplies.
