LAWRENCE NOTES

[From Ode Correspondent.) I Thu first of a series of lectures on first aid and home nursing was given by Dr W. Sutherland in the Anglican Hall, Lawrence, on Tuesday evening. About 20 women and girls attended. It is understood that a meeting will bo called later, and separately, to consider the provision of similar training for men in connection with the national emergency precautions. At the monthly meeting of the Tuapeka Hospital Committee the following tenders for supplies wore accepted : —Goal, etc., Messrs Browne Bros, and T, Kean; bread, Messrs I l '. Martin and C. J. Fairley, in turn; meat, Messrs Barr and Tonkin; and removal of ashes, Mr T Kean. The Lawrence 11.5. A. has cancelled its 1939 reunion owing to the present world situation. This was to have been held in the Town Hall in October. In common with other officers of his department, the stock inspector at Lawrence, Mr Worthington, has been engaged during, the last few days in obtaining particulars of horses likely to bo available for military use. So far he has been making only preliminary inquiries in respect of numbers and prices PERSONAL. Mr J. Jones, of Wellington, is visiting Lawrence on holiday. Mrs G. Brightwell, of Oamaru, has been spending a short holiday in Lawrence. Mr E G. Murphy, station master at Lawrence, and Mrs Murphy are visiting Wellington on holiday. Mr P, Mulder is at present relieving Mr Munphy. BADMINTON. The St Patrick’s Badminton Club played a return match against the Presbyterian Club on the latter’s court The games were fairly even, some exciting finishes being witnessed. Hogg 0-15; J. Fahey lost to E. Duthie, 7-15; G. Leng lost to A. Fulton, 8-15. Presbyterians: 11 sets, 206 points. St. Patrick’s: 5 sets, 143 points. ROXBURGH POLICE COURT. In the Police Court at Roxburgh on Friday, before Mr J. H. Waigth and Dr Gilraour, J.P.s, Bert Moore and James Wilson were each convicted and fined £2 and 10s costs for maliciously removing four stone boulders used for the direction of motor traffic off the road at the hospital on to the footpath, whereby life or limb was lilkely to be endangered. LAWRENCE DISTRICT HIGH • SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the Lawrence District High School Committee was presided over by Mr F. J. Gray. Messrs Gray, Weatherall, and Bartlett were appointed to represent the committee on the South Tuapeka State Schools Sports Sub-association. It was decided to write to the Social Security Department seeking its aid in having the present caretaker appointed as a full-time worker. Messrs A. J. M'Kinlay and G. H. Bartlett were appointed Visiting Committee for the mouth.. Accounts totalling £l7 Os 2d were passed for payment. In view of preesnt world conditions it was decided to have no official celebration of the school's seventy-fifth anniversary, falling due this spring. The report stated that the present roll was:—Primary department. 94 ; secondary, 29 Mr G H Bowie left on leave at" the end of the term, and Mr E. O’Brien had taken up his appointment as relieving secondary assistant. Miss Labes had been forced to take a further period of sick leave, and Miss Matthews was relieving again in her place. GOLF. The first round of the Lawrence Club championship will take place this weekend, and should be played by the twentieth. The draw is as. follows: Templer v. M'Farlaue, Jackman v. M'Dovitt, Beal v. Moore, Winchester v. M‘Ara, Fulton v. John Christopher, Stevens v. Brooks, Mair v. Christophers, Arthur, a bye. Ladies: Mrs Martin v. Miss Nichols, Mrs Fulton v. Miss Robertson, Miss Lawer v. Mrs M‘Farlane, Mrs Morris v. Mrs Moore. The following are the results of the Roxburgh men’s medal handicap, played last Saturday;—J. Jeffery, 70— B—-628 —-62 : J. Burton, 87—18 —69; A. Burton, 89 —20—69; G M’Donald, 95—23 —72; H. Tough, 96—23—73; J. Pannett, 83—10—73; A. Lamb, 82—8- 1 —74; H. Gilchrist, 98—23—76; F, J. Laloli, 93—14—79.
