CALL TO COLOURS

SPECIAL MILITARY FORCE GRATIFYING RESPONSE BY RECRUITS MEDICAL EXAMINATION COMMENCES Not since the commencement of the Great War has the Drill Hall been so militaristic, and yesterday the rush to enlist commenced in earnest. Whereas during the past few months the enrolments have been spasmodic, yesterday there was a regular rush of recruits applying for acceptance in the special military force for overseas service or within the Dominion. There were 76 further applications yesterday, bringing the total to 417. The next stage after enrolling—the medical examination—was commenced last evening and was continued to-day. It is expected that the examination of all the applicants will not be completed until the end of next week. All eligible single men at least, according to the staff area officer (Major A. Bongard) can expect to attend for medical examination within the next few days. There were five clerks and a typist, with three assistants during the busiest period, to cope with the rush to enlist, and they carried out their heavy work quickly and efficiently. The office at the Drill Hall is open from 9 a.m. until 5.30 p.m., after which the checking and filing and official examination of the registrations have to be made. Indicative of the widespread desire to assist in the defence of New Zealand in the Otago district has been the number of inquiries made to the authorities, _ including 20 postal applications to join. Over 20 forms have been sent out by letter already. All types of men are recruiting, and very favourable comment on their general appearance and bearing has been* made by officers of the Army Department. Their occupations range from company directors to labourers. Included in those who have registered are an ex-Grenadier Guardsman, a former lieutenant in the Royal Marines, and an ex-Royal Marine. Serving Territorials have been given a commendable lead by two of their officers. They are Captains C. Wilson and 11. S. Orr, who were the first two to make their applications. The roll for yesterday and this morning included'several serving and retired officers. The "registrations are being made in five groups. Group No. 1 includes officers on both the reserve and the active lists. Groun No. 1A is for retired or ex-officers, Group No. 2 is for single men, group No. 3 for married men without children, and group No. 4 for married men with children. _ The first day’s registrations, grouped in their respective sections and in alphabetical order, were as follows: DUNERIN GROUP I.
