WRESTLING

AMATEUR TITLES PROMISING TALENT REVEALED With some promising new blood the preliminary rounds of the Otago Amateur wrestling championships at the association’s gymnasium last night produced several keen and spirited bouts, the tournament attracting 39 entries, a good indication of the steady growth of amateur wrestling in Dunedin. One of the outstanding performers was Frank Keach, the New_ Zealand amateur light-weight champion, who won his three bouts in the light-weight class without the loss of a bad point, his best opposition coming from R. Richardson in the third round. Keach’s experience and skill' told in the end, however, and he was able to pin his man, but Richardson deserved all credit for his showing. Neil Thomson, who won the featherweight title last year and also the scientific trophy, stepped up into the light-weight class, and going through three rounds without conceding a bad point he looks like providing the New Zealand champion with a good tussle to-night. Some smart wrestling was seen in the welter-weight class, in which > A. Idour went through three rounds without the loss of a bad point, and H. Stevens, who had a bye in the first round, also failed to lose a bad point. The meeting of Stevens and Idour should he one of the highlights of to-night’s programme. In the other divisions there were some very well-contested bouts, promising well for the finals. The bouts were decided under Olympic rules. A competitor winning by a fall received no bad points, while his opponent received three bad points. If a bout is decided by the vote of the judges the winner receives one bad point, while his opponent receives three bad points. If the vote of the judges be two to one, the winner receives one bad point, his opponent receives two bad points. A competitor having accumulated five bad points is eliminated. Each bout was listed for one six-minute and three three-minute rounds. Messrs F. Anderson, 0. Turner, M. Coughlan, and W. J. Coughlan acted as referees and judges, and Messrs C. Hutt and J. J. Hall were the recorders, Mr T. M'Cracken being the timekeeper. The weight divisions were:—Bantam, 8.11; feather, 9.8; light, 10.5; welter, 11.4; middle, 12.6; light-heavy, 13.9; heavy, over 13.9.
