UNIQUE AMONG FOOTBALLERS
ABSTEMIOUS FIJIAN TOURISTS FULLY OCCUPIED WITH SIGHTSEEING The Fijian footballers, who have been touring INew Zealand, are unique among Rugby touring teams in that, except for an occasional glass, they are rigorously “ kept off tiie beer.” They are the most abstemious band of players who have ever toured the Dominion (says the New Zealand Observer. ). In their native islands, it appears, they must have permits to enter public bars, and only four or five of the team enjoy this privilege. In any case they have a childlike interest in the many strange things to be seen in New Zealand, and their time is so fully occupied with sightseeing that the usual indulgences of touring athletes do not interest them. . ...
It is significant that in Auckland they stayed at the People’s Palace, and the usual convivial dinner which follows representative matches in Auckland was not held.
Entertainment of the team in New Zealand has been largely taken over by the Methodist Church, which has a number of adherents among the players. On Sunday in Auckland the day’s xogramme included a drive to the Wesleyan College at Paerata. Viewing factories is also a favourite amusement with these rare Rugby birds.
