WELTER-WEIGHT CHAMPION RETIRES “■ LONG BOXING CAREER ENDS Seventeen years ago Neville Mudgway put on the gloves for the first time; last week he announced that he had hung them up for good so far as competitive boxing is concerned. Mudgway told the Wellington ‘ Sports Post ’ that there were one or two reasons for his retiring, but the main one was because of his failing eyesight. He has been trying to convince himself that his sight was not failing, but it lias now been brought homo to him conclusively. Wisely ho has‘announced his retirement from competition. Mudgway also mentioned that he might "leave Wellington for Auckland if the international situation became "raver. Tic wants to he near his faniilv. ... . But in whichever city he is situated in the future he intends to do a hit of light sparring. He will, too, if opportunity offers, hand on his knowledge knowledge which has earned him the reputation of being the cleverest defensive fighter in the country for years.

Billy Parris, Stock, Vic. Caltaux. Don. Johnson, and Norm. Fisher are just a few of the fairly competent wel-ter-weight brigade in the Dominion who are bound to start angling for a title fight almost immediately. Tt will probably be left to the New Zealand Council to decide the contestants for the crown. Actually on the day that Mudgway announced his retirement, a letter was received by the New Zealand Council from Stock challenging Mudgway for the title. Stock’s chances for a title match soared a trifle after his defeat of Caltaux.
