IFkom OtJR Oamaru Correspondent.] KUROW FIRE BRIGADE. A volunteer fire brigade has been formed at Kurow. Mr W. Granger has been appointed captain, Mr Hodges first lieutenant, Mr D. Campbell senior foreman, Mr Sargeant junior foreman, and the Rev. W. Edgar secretary. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. At the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., judgment for plaintiffs by default was given in the following civil cases:—O. C. Gould v. N. Hampstead, £2 15s 6d. costs £1 10s 6d; Edgar Simpson v. H. Allington, £ll 2s 7d, costs £2 18s; Waitaki Supply Stores v. F. Harris, £9 0s 7d, costs £1 12s 6d. RAINFALL. In the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday, 73 points of rain were recorded in Oamaru. MEADOWBANK TENNIS CLUB. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Meadowbank Tennis Club:—President, Mr A, R. Tait; vice-presidents, Messrs N. M'Quade and Hall; secretary, Miss D. Miller; treasurer, Miss Rutherford; club captain, Mr J. L. South; auditor, Mr H. J. Robertson; committee—Miss Blvth, Mrs Tait, Messrs Spowarth, Hall, M'Donald, and Symons; delegate, Mr M'Donald; trustees Messrs M'Donald and Tait; social conveners, Mrs Sopwarth and Miss Blyth. AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. Mr J. H. Main presided over a meeting of the new executive of the Automobile Association (North Otago). A resolution was passed offering full co-operation with the Government during time of war. „ , Messrs I. Dalmer, J. Gerne, and D. H Thomson were delegated to meet the chairman of the Oamaru Borough Council Works Committee regarding the corner of Lune and Severn streets and Douglas Terrace. • A grant of £25 was made to the Centennial memorial fund, and £3 3s was granted towards the commemorative cairn and shelter at Haast Pass. The S.I.M.U. Insurance Association forwarded £55, which was received with thanks. . , TT Messrs J. H. Mam, Gerne, and H. Hay were appointed delegates to tho annual meeting of the South Island Motor Union. W.C.T.U. At the monthly meeting of the Oamaru branch of tho Women’s Christian Temperance Union Mrs Hiett (Dominion president) gave an illuminating address on the work of the union. She said that if the £9,000,000 spent in New Zealand on alcohol last year had
been spent on what was necessary for progress, there would be few problems for social workers. GARRISON MUNICIPAL BAND. At a meeting of the jubilee committee of the Oamaru Garrison Municipal Band, sub-committees were appointed as follows: —Publicity, Messrs W. R. F. Naylor, W. Austin, A. Baxter, and Rusbatch; catering, Messrs A. Block and A. Bremner; invitations, Messrs J. Hambley, F. J. Familton, and W. L. Burns. Mr Edward Smith (Gore) was appointed adjudicator, and Mr A. Homer (Dunedin) supervisor. ENLISTMENTS. Up to noon yesterday there had been 44 enlistments in Oamaru for the special military force. WARDEN’S COURT. Mr H. W. Bundle. S.M., presided at a short sitting of the Oamaru Warden’s Court yesterday. A license for a race near the junction of the Awakino and Waitaki Rivers was granted to W. L.
