Crane and Sons warehouse adjacent to Circular Quay Inst night caused a heavy blanket of smoke, all parts of the city being penetrated. Buildings in the danger zone gave nearly 100 firemen a worrying time, and several wore overcome by smoke. The fire originated in the basement, which had to be flooded with water from dozens of hoses. Several firemen, wearing smolke helmets, had to swim through the water to reach safety.
