SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
[From Our Correspondent.] OBITUARY. Mr William Nelson, who passed away at Clinton last week, was a very old resident of the district. He took an active part in affaire of the township for many years, and was a member of the Town Board and school committee for lengthy periods. He was also well known as a bowler when the Clinton Club was in existence some years ago, and represented South Otago on occasions. Mrs Mary Hassett, who died at Milton on Saturday at the advanced age of 79, had resided in the district for over half a century.- Her maiden name was O’Keeffe, and she was born in County Cork, Ireland, coining to New Zealand about 60 years ago in the ship Invercargill. After residing in the Palmerston South district for a year or two, she married Mr Edmond Hassett, of Money more, and for the past 57 years she has resided there, Mr Hassett being a threshing mill owner. When her husband died 34 years ago, leaving her with a young family, she carried on the threshing mill business until a few years ago. She is survived by one daughter and three sons—Mrs E. Graffin (Moneymore), Messrs Denis (Frankton Junction), William (Moneymore). and David (Palmerston). The funeral took place on Monday, Rev. Father Rooney officiating, WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. In the absence of the president (Mrs (R. Newson), Mrs W. Anderson presided 'at the monthly meeting of the Balclutha Women’s Institute yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance considering the inclement weather, and proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem. Reference was made to the illness of the president and best -wishes expressed for her speedy recovery. The motto was “ Kind words can never die, but they must he spoken before they can live.” Invitations were received to Kaka Point and Kaitangata birthday parties, and Mrs J. D. Landels was appointed delegate to the half-yearly council meeting to be held on October' 26. Appeals were received from the Institute of the Blipd' and on behalf of the Mako•gai lepers and favourably received. Arrangements were made for the display to be made at the Balclutha Horticultural Society’s spring show in the institute “ bay ” section. During the social half-hour. Mrs P. M’Gregor gave a vocal solo, and after afternoon tea had been dispensed by the hostesses, Mr E. V. Hughes, district superintendent of the St. John Ambulance Association (Balclutha division), with the assistance of Misses Wells and N. Gold, gave an interesting talk and demonstration on St. John work. The points competition took the form of an apron parade, the prize-winners being Mrs Marshall 1. Mrs J. Smith 2, and Mrs P. M'Gregor 3.
