BUILDING IN DUNEDIN

A SATISFACTORY YEAR RECORD ISSUE OF PERMITS SEVERAL MAJOR CONSTRUCTIONAL UNDERTAKINGS Illuminating figures detailing building activity in Dunedin during the year ended March 31 are the subject of a detailed report by the city building surveyor (Mr L. D. Coombs). The most significant feature of this data is the fact that the City Council issued a record number of permits (989) of a total value of £688,148. As these permits are a barometer of building activity in Dunedin the year has been a most satisfactory one. The city surveyor has also supplied other particulars for inclusion in the departmental reports that are particularly interesting. TEN-YEAR RECORD.

MAJOR WORKS. The principal buildings erected or added to were for:—Tilbury Forwarding Company, Crawford street; Otago Harbour Board Building, Wharf street; additions Cadbury Fry Hudson Ltd., Castle and Cumberland streets; Fairbairn, Henderson Ltd., Princes and Bond streets; King’s High School, Bay View road ; Otago Education Board Training College, Anzac Avenue and Union street; E.P. and L. Department, D.C.C., Cumberland street; Government workshops and stores, Cobdcn street. There were 221 new dwellings (exclusive of Government houses) erected during the year, and of these five cost over £6OO an'd up to £7OO. five cost over £7OO and up to £BOO, 23 cost over £BOO and up to £9OO. 43 cost'over £9OO and up to £I.OOO, 137 cost over £I.OOO and up to £2,000. four cost over £2,000 and up to £3,000, two cost over £3.000 and up to £4,000, two cost over £4.000.

Of the flats erected the more important were those at corner Brown and Russell streets, corner View and Tennyson streets, and additions to flats in Forth street; also 2S dwellings were converted into 08 flats.
