POLICE COURT

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.)' “ STUPID DRUNKEN ACT.” Domestic troubles were said by counsel (Mr C. J. L. White) to have been the cause of “ a stupid drunken act ’*• upon the part of John Stewart, who was charged with having used obscene language and also: with haying resisted the police. ’ , Senior-sergeant Claasen said that' Stewart had gone to a certain residence on Saturday night in search of his wife, whom he thought to have gone visiting there. When asked to leave he used , objectionable terms, and was beaten off with a broom., A constable who had warned accused to go away home' was assailed with obscene language, and arrested accused, who resisted and damaged the constable’s uniform. Accused was 69, years of age, and had not previously been before the court. 1 Mr White said, tjiat the lapse waa due to domestic trouble. . Accused wa« a steady worker, but had lately given way to:drinking at week-ends. Owing to his own struggles accused had been injured in the arms, and his whole conduct was that of a man who was not at the time in his normal senses.

On tbe charge of using obscene language, accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months, and on the charge of resisting the police a fin» of £3 was inflicted, in default seven, days’ imprisonment. A charge of damaging the constable’s uniform wa« withdrawn on condition that 10* damages was paid.

DRUNKENNESS. James Edgar, on a charge of drunkenness, was 'fined 20s, ‘in default 43 hours’ imprisonment. A first offender was similarly dealt with.

MAINTENANCE. , , William George Deans p was charge! with default of a maintenance order, arrears being stated at £ls 10s.—Defendant was sentenced to 21 days’ imprisonment. the warrant to be suspended so long as the amount due i* paid by instalments as directed by Hi* Worship. . ’’
