RAYON INDUSTRY
BIG INCREASE IN PRODUCTION JAPAN, ITALY, AND GERMANY ACTIVE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, October 8. The Imperial Economic Committee’s summary' of industrial fibres production shows a marvellous increase in the world production of rayon staple fibre from 8.300,0001 b in 1929 to 133,800,0001 b last year, chiefly as the result of the development of the industry in Italy and Germany. 'J’he extent to which it can be substituted for other textile fibres remains problematical. On the one hand, the use of rayon in mixed goods has undoubtedly widened the scope for utilisation of cotton and wool, while on the other hand it has probably replaced natural fibres in certain branches of the hosiery industry, if not, elsewhere. It is significant to note that the three largest producers of rayon—-Japan, Italy, and Germany—are particularly dependent on foreign sources for the supply of their textile raw materials.
